Google Search Console Generative AI Performance Report Now Widely Available

Google Search Console's generative AI performance report, which tracks how websites appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, now appears to be available to all property owners as of August 11, 2026. Google has not yet issued a formal announcement confirming the full rollout, but multiple site owners have confirmed seeing the report across their Search Console profiles.

The details

Google first introduced the generative AI performance reports on June 3, 2026, in a blog post by Hillel Maoz, Search Ecosystem Engineering Manager, and Moshe Samet, Product Manager Lead for Search Console. The reports were initially limited to a subset of websites for testing. Google expanded access several weeks later, and the report now appears to be live across all eligible properties.

The report surfaces as an expandable tab within the main Performance report in Search Console. It tracks impression data for pages that appear in Google's generative AI features on Search, specifically AI Overviews and AI Mode. A separate report covers generative AI features in Google Discover.

According to Google's Search Console help documentation, the report provides the following data dimensions:

  • Impressions: How often URLs from a site appeared in generative AI features in Search and Discover.
  • Pages: Which specific URLs appeared within AI features.
  • Countries: Geographic breakdown of visibility.
  • Devices: Desktop, tablet, or mobile distribution (available for Search results).
  • Dates: Performance over time with hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly granularity.

The documentation notes that data on the chart is aggregated by property. For example, if two results from the same site appear in a single generative AI search feature, they count as one impression in the chart total. Data grouped by page is aggregated by page. Preliminary data, indicated by a dotted line on the graph, may change as collection continues.

Notable limitations

The report does not include click data or query-level data. Site owners can see which pages received impressions in AI features and how many, but they cannot see which specific search queries triggered the appearance or whether users clicked through to their site. This is a gap for SEO teams trying to understand the full impact of generative AI on search traffic.

Google's documentation states that the report will not appear if a site "hasn't received enough impressions in generative AI features on Google Search." This threshold-based visibility means smaller sites or those rarely cited in AI Overviews may not see the report at all.

The report also excludes data from Search Labs experiments, which Google describes as still in active development. Only data from generally available generative AI features is included.

Background and context

Google launched AI Overviews in May 2024, bringing AI-generated summaries to the top of search results for many queries. AI Mode, a more conversational search experience, followed. Both features cite web pages as sources, but the relationship between AI-generated answers and traditional click-through traffic has been a concern for publishers and SEO professionals since the beginning.

Before the generative AI performance report, site owners had no direct way to measure how often their content appeared in these AI features. Impression data from AI Overviews and AI Mode was bundled into the overall Search performance report without a dedicated breakdown. The new report separates this data, giving site owners their first dedicated view of AI search visibility.

Google has also published a separate guide for optimizing content for generative AI in Google Search, released on May 15, 2026. That resource covers best practices for appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, including technical SEO recommendations and content quality guidance.

Why this matters for SEO and AI visibility

The wide availability of this report gives SEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) teams their first standardized, first-party tool for measuring AI search visibility. While the absence of click and query data limits the depth of analysis, the impression and page-level data alone allow teams to identify which content is being surfaced by Google's AI systems and which is not.

For organizations investing in GEO strategies, this report establishes a baseline metric: AI feature impressions. Teams can now track this over time, compare it against traditional search performance, and correlate changes with content updates or algorithm shifts. The country and device breakdowns add useful context, revealing where AI search adoption is strongest among their audiences.

The missing query data, however, means that the question many SEO teams most want answered, which queries trigger AI Overviews for their content, is still not addressable with this data. Google has indicated it is "continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights and data would be most helpful," suggesting additional metrics may arrive in future updates.

What to watch next

Google has not formally announced the completion of the rollout. A confirmed announcement would provide clarity on whether any properties are still excluded. SEO teams should also watch for potential additions to the report, particularly click data and query-level reporting, which Google has hinted at in its original announcement. The company's help documentation notes that the list of covered generative AI capabilities, currently AI Overviews and AI Mode, "will be updated over time as we develop Google Search."
