Google Search Console Generative AI Report Expands to Most Users

Google has expanded access to its generative AI performance report in Search Console to most website owners. The report gives SEOs their first way to measure how content performs in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Initially limited to a small group of testers, it now appears as an expandable tab under the main performance report for the majority of properties.

The rollout is not yet complete. Google's John Mueller confirmed on Reddit that the report remains unavailable for some domains, noting that "it's not yet every domain" and that "these are only shown if there's sufficient data to display."

The details

The generative AI performance report tracks impressions for two features: AI Overviews and AI Mode. According to Google's official documentation, the report breaks data down by pages (which URLs appeared), countries, devices (desktop, tablet, or mobile), and dates with hourly to monthly granularity.

The report does not include click data or query-level information. Google stated in its documentation that "we're rolling out this report to a subset of website owners, allowing for thorough testing before rolling it further," though recent observations suggest the expansion has reached most active Search Console users.

The report excludes data from Search Labs experiments, which Google considers "still in active development." It also does not show data for sites that have excluded themselves from generative AI features through Search Console settings.

SEO professionals began noticing the expanded availability in early August 2026. Vijay Chauhan, an SEO consultant, flagged the change on X (formerly Twitter) after checking multiple Search Console profiles. Independent verification across approximately 25 different Search Console properties confirmed the report's widespread availability, though some users reported not seeing it yet.

Why this matters for SEO and AI visibility

This is the first official tool that measures AI search visibility. Before it existed, SEO teams had no direct way to know whether their content appeared in AI Overviews or AI Mode, let alone which pages performed best in those features.

Without click data, the report can't show actual traffic from AI features. Impression data still gives teams a baseline: they can see which content types and topics gain visibility in Google's AI-generated results. It's a starting point, not a complete picture.

The geographic and device breakdowns are useful for teams working on localization or technical SEO. If AI Overviews show your content more often on mobile in certain countries, that's a signal worth tracking.

What to watch next

Google said it will update the list of generative AI capabilities tracked in the report "over time as we develop Google Search." More AI features will likely be added as they launch.

The big question is click data. Google hasn't committed to adding it, but the standard performance report includes clicks, so there's reason to expect the same here eventually.

For now, SEO teams still need third-party tools and manual tracking to estimate conversion rates from AI results. The gap between impressions and actual traffic remains the report's biggest limitation.
