Google Expands Generative UI From AI Mode Into AI Overviews
Google has started rolling out generative UI capabilities in AI Overviews, extending a feature that previously lived only in AI Mode. The company announced the expansion on August 19, 2026, as part of a broader set of AI-powered study tools for Search.
What was announced
Google said generative UI — which builds custom visual layouts, interactive tools, and simulations on the fly — has launched globally in English in AI Mode and has started rolling out in AI Overviews. Full availability in AI Overviews is expected in the coming weeks. The announcement came from Awaneesh Verma, Distinguished Product Manager for Search, in a blog post about new learning tools in Search.
What changed
Generative UI first appeared in AI Mode in November 2025 alongside the Gemini 3 launch. At Google I/O 2026, the company said the capability would become available to everyone in Search that summer, free of charge. This week's announcement confirms that rollout is now underway, with AI Overviews as the newest surface.
AI Overviews is the larger of the two surfaces, appearing for a wide range of queries across all Google Search users. AI Mode is the dedicated conversational interface available within Search.
Details and availability
Generative UI produces a custom visual layout in response to a query. When Google's model determines it would help, that layout can include an interactive tool or simulation. Examples Google provided include:
- An interactive pH scale that appears when searching for "ph scale" within an AI Overview
- A follow-up prompt that plots citrus fruits on the same pH scale within AI Mode
- A mortgage calculator that lets users compare loan terms
The feature is available globally in English. Google did not specify which queries will trigger generative UI as the rollout expands, or whether it will extend to other languages on a defined timeline.
The announcement also included practice quizzes in both AI Overviews and AI Mode, a new interactive Lens learning experience, and notebooks in AI Mode. These features are separate from generative UI but part of the same announcement.
Context
Generative UI represents Google building interactive experiences directly within search results rather than linking to external tools. At I/O 2026, Google framed the capability as part of its broader push to make Search a destination for task completion, not just information retrieval.
Sites built around calculators, converters, comparison tools, or interactive educational content may see increased overlap with what Search now generates directly. The announcement does not describe any effect on ranking, traffic, or how existing tool-based sites will be treated in results where generative UI appears.
What has not been confirmed
Google did not provide a specific date for full AI Overviews availability, only saying "the coming weeks." The company has not described which query types will trigger generative UI, whether it will replace or supplement existing AI Overview layouts, or how it interacts with site-sourced content in those overviews. No traffic or ranking impact data was provided.
