Google Confirms Favicon Bug in Search Results, Says Fix Is in Progress
Google has confirmed that a bug on its end is causing website favicons to disappear from Google Search results. Rajan Patel, a search advocate at Google, said on August 21 that the company identified the issue and is working to resolve it.
What was confirmed
Starting around August 18–19, multiple site owners began reporting that their favicons — the small site icons displayed next to search results — had vanished, replaced by a generic globe icon. The reports came through Google's Webmaster Help Forums, social media, and SEO community channels.
On August 20, Rajan Patel said he was looking into the reports. The following day, he confirmed the root cause: "It's an issue on our end. We identified the issue and we're addressing it as quickly as we can."
What changed
Before the bug, sites that met Google's favicon requirements — a properly formatted image file, a <link rel="icon"> tag in the homepage header, and crawlability by Googlebot-Image — would have their favicon displayed alongside organic search results. During the bug, even sites with correct implementations saw their icons replaced by the default globe placeholder.
SEO consultant Glenn Gabe reported on August 21 that LinkedIn's favicon was among those affected, indicating the issue extended beyond smaller sites to major platforms with properly configured icons.
Scope and timeline
- The issue began around August 18–19, 2026.
- Google confirmed the bug on August 21, 2026.
- The timing preceded the August 2026 spam update (which ran August 18–21), but the two are not believed to be related.
- Google has not provided a specific timeline for when the fix will be fully deployed.
Context
Google's favicon documentation states that favicons help users quickly identify sites when scanning search results. The requirements include:
- A square image, with size a multiple of 48px (e.g., 48x48, 96x96, 144x144).
- A
<link>element in the homepage header specifying the icon URL. - The icon file must be crawlable by Googlebot-Image and not blocked by robots.txt.
- Google supports one favicon per hostname. Subdomains are treated as separate sites.
Google notes that a favicon is not guaranteed to appear even when all guidelines are met, but the current bug is affecting sites that previously displayed favicons without issue.
What has not been confirmed
- Google has not stated what caused the bug internally.
- No timeline has been given for full resolution.
- It is unclear whether the bug affects favicons in AI Overviews, AI Mode, or other search features beyond standard organic results.
- Google has not indicated whether site owners need to take any action (such as requesting reindexing) once the fix is deployed, or whether the icons will return automatically.
