Google has added Gemini 3.7 Flash as a selectable model in AI Mode, one day after the model's initial release for coding and agent tasks. The rollout is live globally in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
What was announced
Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, announced the addition on X on August 14, writing that Gemini 3.7 Flash is "better at following instructions + understanding your intent, so you get even more helpful responses." Users can select the model from the model menu in AI Mode's "Ask anything" bar, located under the "Gemini 3 models" section alongside "Auto" and "Pro."
Google introduced Gemini 3.7 Flash on August 13 through its official blog, describing it as its "most intelligent workhorse model yet for coding and agents." The model shows measurable gains over the previous Gemini 3.6 Flash in software engineering benchmarks, including FrontierCode 1.1 Main (43.6% vs 34.4%) and DeepSWE v1.1 (65.3% vs 49.0%).
What changed
AI Mode previously offered "Fast" and "Pro" as selectable model options, with Gemini 3.5 Flash serving as the global default since May 2026. The addition of Gemini 3.7 Flash gives paid subscribers a third explicit choice. Google has not said whether the new model replaces the current default or factors into the automatic model routing system that was introduced in November 2025.
Details and availability
The model is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in all supported AI Mode countries. Free-tier users do not have access to the model selector. Google launched Gemini 3.7 Flash through the API at an introductory price of half the cost per million tokens of Gemini 3.6 Flash, available through the end of 2026.
The pattern follows Google's consistent approach since AI Mode launched: new model generations arrive first as selectable options for paid tiers before potentially becoming the default. Gemini 3 Pro became an option alongside the existing default in November 2025, Gemini 3 Flash became the default in December, and Gemini 3.5 Flash replaced it as the global default at I/O in May 2026.
Context
Google has structured AI Mode around a tiered model system since its launch. Flash models serve as Search's production tier due to lower latency and cost, a positioning Jeff Dean, then Google's chief scientist, confirmed in February. The rapid integration of Gemini 3.7 Flash into AI Mode — just one day after its general release — suggests Google is accelerating the cycle of bringing new model capabilities into its consumer search product.
What has not been confirmed
Google has not stated whether Gemini 3.7 Flash will become the default model in AI Mode or whether it is included in the Auto routing system. The official support documentation for AI Mode's model menu still describes only "Fast" and "Pro" as options and has not been updated to reflect the new tier. It is also unclear whether the model will eventually become available to free-tier users, as previous Flash models did.
