Multiple SEOs Report Sharp Drop in Google Search Console Performance Data Starting August 12
Multiple SEO professionals report that Google Search Console performance reports show a significant decline in impressions and clicks beginning around August 12-13, 2026. The drop affects both the standard Search performance report and the Generative AI performance report, though Google's official data anomalies page does not list the issue as of August 17.
What was reported
SEO consultant Glenn Gabe wrote on X that he is hearing from site owners about a drop in clicks starting around August 12 in Google Search Console. Gabe noted that visibility reporting remains stable and analytics data shows no corresponding decline, suggesting the issue may be a data reporting bug rather than an actual traffic loss.
"Visibility reporting is stable and analytics shows no drop," Gabe wrote. "Just a heads-up if you are seeing a weird drop starting 8/12 but visibility is still strong + analytics shows no drop."
Other SEO professionals report the same pattern. Meenka Pandita posted on LinkedIn that nearly every client project shows the same pattern: weeks of growth followed by a sudden cliff-edge drop within a couple of days around August 12. The drop appears across multiple sites simultaneously, which Pandita noted suggests a systemic issue rather than site-specific problems.
A thread on Google Webmaster Forums reports a large decrease in impressions in the Generative AI Features report starting August 13. Dave Smart, responding in the thread, said he would escalate the issue to Google, though he noted he could not provide a timeframe for a response.
What changed
The reports describe a sharp decline in reported impressions and clicks in Google Search Console performance reports beginning around August 12-13. The Generative AI performance report appears particularly affected, with some users describing the drop as extreme. The standard Search performance report also shows declines, though some reports suggest these are less severe than the Generative AI report drops.
Google's official "Data anomalies in Search Console" page, which records known logging errors and data issues, does not list the August 12 issue. The most recent entry on that page is from June 24, 2026, which documented a logging error affecting Discover and Generative AI in Discover reports.
Details and availability
The reported issue affects:
- Standard Search performance reports in Google Search Console
- Generative AI performance reports in Google Search Console
- Multiple sites and properties across different SEO professionals' portfolios
The drop appears to be a reporting issue rather than actual traffic loss. Gabe stated that visibility reporting and analytics data do not show corresponding declines, suggesting the underlying traffic remains stable while the Search Console reporting is inaccurate.
Context
Google has previously documented similar data anomalies in Search Console. The official data anomalies page records incidents where logging errors caused decreases in reported clicks and impressions. Past issues have affected Discover reports, Job listing reports, and bulk data exports. Google typically notes when issues affect data logging only and do not reflect actual traffic changes.
The current reports follow a pattern seen in previous incidents: multiple independent observers notice the same anomaly simultaneously, and the issue appears to be a reporting artifact rather than a real change in search visibility or traffic.
What has not been confirmed
Google has not publicly acknowledged the August 12 reporting issue. The official data anomalies page does not list it, and no Google representative has confirmed whether the company is investigating. It remains unclear whether this is a temporary logging error that will be corrected in future data updates, or a more persistent reporting issue.
The reports do not specify whether the drop affects all Google Search Console users equally or only certain property types, regions, or report configurations. It is also not confirmed whether the Generative AI report and standard Search performance report are affected by the same underlying issue or separate problems.
