Google Tell Maps Rolls Out AI-Powered Conversational Contributions for Local Places
Google Maps is rolling out Tell Maps, a feature that lets contributors suggest edits and share local tips through natural conversation with Ask Maps. The feature was announced on August 6, 2026, and began rolling out to users in early September 2026.
What was announced
Google introduced Tell Maps as part of a broader set of Ask Maps updates. The feature allows Google Maps contributors to suggest edits conversationally through Ask Maps and the Contribute tab, rather than using the traditional structured edit forms. Users can also upload a photo of a storefront sign, and Maps will detect updated hours from the image and ask for confirmation before submitting the suggestion.
The feature also supports sharing insider tips. Users can say something like "more parking is available behind the building," and Ask Maps will surface that information to others in the community.
What changed
Before Tell Maps, contributors used structured forms to suggest edits to business listings — updating hours, adding photos, or correcting addresses through specific input fields. The new feature replaces that workflow with a conversational interface powered by Gemini models. Google says the AI handles finding the listing, formatting the contribution, and preparing the submission, with the user confirming before it goes through.
Claudia Tomina, who posted about the rollout on LinkedIn, described the feature as "genuinely agentic," noting that the AI takes action on the user's behalf — finding the listing, formatting the contribution, and posting it. She reported testing the feature and finding that it could not locate a service-area business she tried to mark as nonexistent, and that a tip she posted appeared ready to publish as a customer post and was under review.
Details and availability
Google says the conversational contributions feature is rolling out in the United States, with more countries to follow. Food ordering, hotel discovery, and event discovery through Ask Maps are also part of the same update, rolling out in the U.S. alongside the conversational contributions.
The broader Ask Maps update, which includes Tell Maps, is available in over 150 countries and territories in English, as well as in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico.
Google says built-in protection systems review suggested edits for accuracy and will not post suggestions that violate its policies. The company has not published a detailed timeline for the full global rollout of conversational contributions specifically.

Tell Maps is part of Google's larger effort to integrate Gemini AI capabilities into Google Maps through Ask Maps, which Google describes as its biggest Maps transformation in over a decade. The feature draws on contributions from over 500 million Maps contributors.
