Google AI Mode Adds Link Carousels for Developing Topics
Google has extended link carousels for developing topics to AI Mode, giving publishers and original sources more direct visibility in conversational AI search responses. The feature was already available in AI Overviews since June 2026 and now appears in AI Mode queries as well.
What was announced
Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, announced on August 25 that link carousels for developing topics are now live in AI Mode. When users ask about trending or developing stories in AI Mode, they will see a carousel of links to relevant articles and webpages displayed prominently in the response. The carousels also include content from any Preferred Sources the user has selected.
What changed
Before this update, link carousels for developing topics existed only in AI Overviews, the generated summaries that appear directly on the search results page. AI Mode, the conversational interface within Google Search, did not surface these link carousels. Now both surfaces show them, meaning publishers can receive link-level visibility in two distinct AI-powered search experiences rather than one.
The change applies specifically to developing topics and trending stories. It does not apply to all AI Mode responses — evergreen or factual queries may still produce standard AI-generated answers without a dedicated link carousel.
Details and availability
According to Stein, the feature works as follows: when a user asks AI Mode about something that is trending, the response includes links to relevant articles and webpages displayed "front and center." Users who have set Preferred Sources will see content from those sources included in the carousel.
Google's official blog post on Preferred Sources, published on August 20, confirmed that the Preferred Sources feature operates across Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Over 600,000 unique sources have been selected by users since the feature launched.
The link carousels represent a structural shift in how AI search surfaces original reporting. Rather than only synthesizing information into a generated answer, Google now provides direct pathways to the source material for news and developing stories.
Context
Google first introduced link carousels in AI Overviews in June 2026, initially for top stories and developing topics. The expansion to AI Mode follows the broader rollout of Preferred Sources, which lets readers select publications they want to see more frequently across Google's search surfaces.
The move comes amid ongoing discussion between publishers and search platforms about how AI-generated responses handle source attribution. Some publishers have welcomed increased link visibility, while others have raised concerns about AI-generated content that reproduces their work without clear attribution or referral traffic.
For publishers and SEO professionals, the practical implication is that appearing in AI Mode link carousels for developing topics now requires the same fundamentals as appearing in AI Overviews: being recognized as an original source for a developing story, having content that Google's systems identify as relevant to trending queries, and potentially benefiting from users who have added the publication as a Preferred Source.
What has not been confirmed
Google has not published detailed documentation on how it selects which sources appear in the link carousels for developing topics. The ranking or selection signals within the carousel — beyond relevance to the trending query — are not publicly specified. It is also unclear whether the carousels roll out globally at once or in a phased manner by region or language.
